Raising an Olympian

Three weeks ago, countless Filipinos stayed up late to watch the first figure skater from the Philippines compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Seventeen-year-old Michael Christian Martinez made history for his country and inspired many to continue reaching for their dreams.

Behind this young man is his number one supporter, his mom Maria Teresa. Like her, other loving moms and dads also desire to see their children excel in things they like doing. Early Childhood Education specialist Marah Vasquez-Estuesta affirms that one of the most rewarding parts of being a parent is the happiness of discovery and recognition of their children’s budding talents along with letting kids find joy in developing and using these.

“From the time our children were born, we should be able to tune in and look closer at what comes easily to them and what makes them happy,” says Teacher Marah, who is part-owner and administrator of Mindbuilders Preschool in BF International, Las Piñas.

She says parents have to spend time with their children and watch them play to see what indicators of talents are being shown. “Do homework together. Keep track of their activities, what they like to collect, and take note of the questions they ask,” says Teacher Marah. “Keep observing as they grow to discover what talents they have and be their number one cheerleader.”

Asian Eye Institute (AEI) Opens in Alabang, Muntinlupa

Patients of the Asian Eye Institute who live in Muntinlupa, Laguna, Cavite, and Batangas no longer have to travel all the way to Makati for their eye care needs. According to VP and General Manager Mr. Alwin S. Sta. Rosa, the new satellite office is a product of them listening to 30% of their patients’ base who actually live in or near Muntinlupa.

“We are very happy to start the year with the opening of our new clinic in Alabang,” expressed Sta. Rosa who added that they are committed to bringing quality eye care closer to those who reside in the South.

The institute, established in 2001, has already served over 100,000 local and foreign patients. It is the only ambulatory eye care center in the Philippines with international healthcare accreditation and provides a full range of services and treatment options for all age groups.

Asian Eye is composed of a team of medical specialists with ten, full-time exclusive and affiliate ophthalmologists, a full-time Low Vision and Contact Lens Specialist, and a pediatric optometrist and orthoptist, most of whom obtained fellowships in their specializations at Harvard Medical School. A full-time anesthesiologist rounds out the team.

The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Awards 2014: Recognizing Real-Life Heroes

In 1988, the Philippine Jaycee Senate, now officially known as JCI Senate Philippines, conceived “The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL)” Awards. The organization enlisted the support of Insular Life to institutionalize public recognition of men and women, aged 41 years and above, who deserve credit for their exemplary contributions to society.

Dr. Lagmay, Dr. Ella, and Sec. Singson
Last January 29, JCI Senate Philippines and Insular Life honored three men who are making a difference in the lives of their fellow Filipinos. In times like these, when a lot of our countrymen are still rebuilding their lives after the recent calamities, it is heartening to know that there are individuals who continue to serve as good examples and who remind us that there are still a lot of things to be thankful for.

The TOFIL awardees for 2013 are Dr. Arsenio B. Ella for Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development; Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay for Geology/Earth Sciences; and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio L. Singson for Government/Public Service.

His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III was present during the ceremonies to personally hand over the trophies to the winners. In his message, the nation’s leader commended the three awardees for their contribution to “the advancement of our people. [They] have done much to elevate their fields, promote public welfare, and fuel national development.” President Aquino lauded their actions and endeavors that make them “true inspirations for our people and ideal role models whom our citizens can emulate.”

Family Congress 2012: Building the Filipino Family

Babies don't come with a manual and so do marriage and parenting. Many in my generation became a husband/wife and a dad/mom without knowing much what's really in store for us. A lot simply relied on what our elders say we should do especially when it comes to newborn care. I'd bet, like me, you'd also say you just kept learning as you went along.

I remember when I became pregnant with my first child. The internet, even cellular phones, were not yet popular then. Books on pregnancy and parenting were scarce and expensive. So I resorted to reading pamphlets I got from my OB-Gyne and a Dr. Spock book that my mom had since the '70s. There were not enough resources to brief me on all the right things I should do once the baby comes. In retrospect, I knew I'd prefer having more know how than what I could get my hands on at the time.

TV shows that discuss relationships became in when Dr. Phil was discovered by Oprah. At least, that's when I believe I started learning more. I already have my four kids at the time and found a lot insights whenever marriage or raising children was talked about. Around 2001, I also discovered a parenting e-group where I got to meet some of the nicest ladies I'm still friends with today. There, we got to share a lot of stuff about our lives and encourage each other whenever one of us is going through some rough patches.

Still, it's different when I hear advice from experts like pediatricians, child psychologists, or marriage counselors. I was fortunate to be able to meet and interview a lot them through my work as a newspaper and magazine contributor. I also got to attend seminars which enriched my knowledge on bringing up kids and nurturing my relationship with my husband.

I am of the belief that we all need to hear what experts have to say. And I'm thankful that there are groups with a vision to help improve relationships among Filipino families. Recently, I attended an event where Ms. Maribel Sison-Dionisio, a well-respected parenting and relationship expert, shared with mommy attendees about the ABCs of Parenting during a bloggers' event held at Fully Booked in Bonifacio High Street.

The talk was like a refresher course for me since I heard Ms. Maribel speak before during a past event and wrote an article about it for Manila Bulletin. You can read that write up, entitled Raising Good Learners, here.

A few months ago, Ms. Maribel had this idea of having a family congress and asked two of her friends to help her. Ms. Fides Reyes, a PR and events organizer, and Ms. Rowie Matti, CEO of the Galileo Enrichment Learning Program, share Ms. Maribel's passion on learning how to be the best parents one can be. Their  sincere vision to help educate other families about relationships and love inspired them to organize the Family Congress 2012: Building the Filipino Family to be held coming August.

Don't stop reading just yet if you are not married yet and/or have no kids! The congress will have a variety of topics that parents, teens, and singles would find very useful. Specifically, we call on:

1. PARENTS who want to: improve on their methods or styles of bringing up their children; validate their parenting style; value and look for ways to bond or show their parent-child relationship; know the value of modern technology and how they can manage it.
2. COUPLES who wish to nurture, maintain, or improve their relationship.
3. TEENS / YOUNG ADULTS who are confused with their emotions and those who are pressured by peers and society.

The organizers shared, “Our vision is to equip every individual with the knowledge and skills they need for their particular relationship stage.” Thus, congress attendees have the freedom to choose one session in the morning and another session in the afternoon from among 10 varied and very interesting topics:

Morning sessions:
1A Migrating and Managing the Digital World by Queena Lee-Chua, Ph.D.
2A Handling the Bully and the Bullied by Honey Carandang, Ph.D.
3A Built for Forever: Preparing Singles for a Lifetime Relationship by Rissa Singson-Kawpeng
4A Teen Talk about Love, Sex, and Dating by Dan and Nabelle Caballes
5A From Wellness to Wholeness (for adults 21 & up) by Harriet Hormillosa, M.A.

Afternoon sessions:
6P Being Friends Forever in Marriage: Learning the Art of Fighting by Allan Dionisio, M.D. & Maribel Dionisio, M.A.
7P Teaching Parents to Talk to Kids & Teens about Sex & Relationship by Michele Alignay, M.A. & Aiza Tabayoyong
8P Managing Teen Emotions by Obet Cabrillas
9P Career, Relationship, and Life Plan for Singles by Pia Nazareno-Acevedo
10P Beyond the Tears: Griefwork by Cathy Babao-Guballa

Aside from attending two sessions, guests will also get to hear inspirational messages from Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle and motivational speaker Francis Kong. To find out more about the above-mentioned organizers and speakers, you can read their profiles here.

The Family Congress’ mission is to provide a venue for learning by gathering the best experts in the field of psychology, parenting, and relationship to share their knowledge to family members, educators, and organizations in the most effective and simplest way. It happens on August 25, 2012 from 8AM to 5PM at the Valle Verde Country Club, Pasig City. It is presented by The Love Institute in partnership with Galileo Enrichment Learning Program and F.I.D. Event Services.

Valentine Activities with Hubby and the Kids

Need ideas how to spend Valentines with your spouse even if you have to bring the kids along?

Image borrowed from www.zazzle.com

It took years before my husband and I could go on a Valentine’s date by ourselves again. With four kids and no maid, we would often end up going out with the whole family or not at all.

Thankfully, my two older boys are now in their teens and can already be trusted to look after their younger brothers for a few hours while mom and dad watch a movie or have a fancy meal.

Other couples don't have that privilege. But hey, you can still have a romantic Valentine's date even with kids in tow. It just takes some creativity.

Starting with a Clean Slate

We're entering a new year tomorrow and, for most people, it's a great time to think about all those goals we'd like to achieve for the next 12 months. If you have kids, you may also want to encourage them to set achievable targets so they'd also learn more about self-discipline and the joys of earning well-deserved rewards.

You can read my latest Manila Bulletin article Going for the Goal to get started :)

How Protected is Your Family Online?

I believe that being web-savvy does not equate to being web-wise. There's a difference.

I know several people, including my teens, who easily navigate the World Wide Web and find information they need in seconds. Unfortunately, many of them still get lured to downloading programs or trying out applications that may harm their computers or, worse, compromise their identities, and their families'.

Just look at the dozens of Facebook applications that send out unauthorized posts on the walls of everyone in your contacts list. That is, if you are gullible enough to be tempted to view a supposedly very interesting video, photo, etc.

A couple of weeks ago, I announced a free seminar for teens in an earlier post. Last Saturday, my two teenage sons attended the said seminar. Later, they acknowledged learning a lot of new things about online safety.

Incidentally, my article about the things I also learned during an earlier Web Safety seminar for parents came out that day in Manila Bulletin's Moms & Babies section. You can read the online version of Web Wise here.

Amazing Mental Arithmetic

I witnessed something amazing a couple of weeks ago -- kids solving difficult math equations using their MINDS! Honestly, I would have difficulty believing it if somebody just told me about it. But I saw with my own eyes how young kids could solve several two to three digit numbers effortlessly both with the use of the abacus and without.

If an Abacus Math center is put up in the Alabang area, there is a very high probability that I would enroll my 12-year-old son there. He was with me during my interview with one of the owners and he was equally impressed at the other kids' abilities.

Read more about SIP Academy Philippines in my article that appeared in Manila Bulletin's Business Agenda section. You may also want to explore the possibilities that this program could offer in developing your own kids' potentials.

I really wish I was able to capture on video what I saw. Perhaps the next time I visit the center in New Manila :)

Two Useful Articles for Parents

Did you know that every person has 8 kinds of intelligences and that the dominant intelligences play a role in our individual book selections? Read my article entitled Book Smart which came out in yesterday's issue of Manila Bulletin. There, you'll be able to check what are the foremost intelligences your child has and how these can help you better choose books that would get him/her to read more.

Last week, another article I wrote came out. If you are a parent of a baby or very young child, you may want to know more about the do's and don'ts in preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome.

BTW, in case you're curious, here's the video I was talking about in the article. WARNING, don't watch if you have a queasy stomach. When I chanced upon this video on Facebook, (I hope people who shared this with others had given some kind of warning, I thought it was just a cute clip! Argh!) I wanted to stop looking a minute or so after the video started but I found myself forced to watch until the very end to see if the baby would still be alive after the end of the song :( I only watched this once and will never watch it again.
