Oct. 16: Thank you so much to all those who joined the Andrea Corr Lifelines CD+DVD Giveaway. Tonight should have been the night we Filipino fans would have heard Andrea sing live if her concert in Manila pushed through. Let's hope there will be a new date announced soon :)

Meanwhile, here are the screen caps of the winning entries. The winners will receive a special edition Lifelines CD+DVD set each:

Patricia Miguela Alpay

Rose Dauz

 Camille Santiago Matuguina

To the winners, please PM me via Facebook a Metro Manila address where I can send you your prize. Please don't forget to take a photo of yourself holding Lifelines once you receive it then send a digital copy to me.

If you noticed, there are only three (3) winners instead of four (4). I regret to inform the others who joined that it's either I failed to see their FB statuses on WBL, Orange Magazine TV, and iDeliver 101's pages  or your status message didn't include the link to the giveaway :(

For those I wasn't able to see, I did search for them earlier, that's why this announcement was made late. Maybe you were not able to set the status to be viewed as "Public"? Anyhow, I hope you understand that I have to stick to the rules to be fair to everyone.

As such, there is ONE more Lifelines set left up for grabs! If you really want to win, please follow the contest mechanics carefully. Deadline of entries would be on Wednesday, October 19, 12MN.  Announcement of the last winner will be made on October 20. Fair enough? :)

This contest has just been extended up to 12MN of October 19. Last winner to be announced on October 20. Please read the mechanics carefully to win. Thank you :)

I know all fans of Andrea Corr have been let down, big time, when it was recently announced that her October 16-17 concerts in the Philippines would have to be postponed. I have, but I’m still looking forward to seeing her and hearing her sing live soon.

In the meantime, let's enjoy her music, listen to her newest songs, and watch a DVD about the making of Lifelines. Here's a great reason to cheer up fellow Corrs fans! I have FOUR (4),  brand new and sealed, limited edition CD+DVD sets of Andrea’s second album LIFELINES to give away! :)

Here’s how to win one:

2. Post a comment below this blog post WHY you deserve to win a CD+DVD set of Lifelines. (Share how HardCORR you are! :p) Please limit replies to a maximum of 5 sentences only. If you don’t have a Blogger or Gmail account and you’re posting as Anonymous, don’t forget to include your name!

3. Attach the link of this blog post (http://mommywrites.blogspot.com/2011/10/win-andrea-corr-lifelines-cd-dvd-set.html) on your Facebook status message then write, "I’d like to win an Andrea Corr Lifelines CD+DVD limited edition set via Write, Breathe, Live (tagged) courtesy of Orange Magazine TV (tagged) to be delivered by iDeliver101 (tagged)." [To tag the pages, just type “@” before each page name. But make sure you 'liked' them first].

Andrea Corr is Finally Coming Back to the Philippines this October!!!!!!

Yeah, excited much thus the profusion of exclamation points in this blog post's title. See, I've been a huge fan of THE CORRS for years. I just deeply regret it that I discovered their wonderful music AFTER they visited the Philippines way back in the late '90s.

Still, I made time to catch up and initially bought a cassette tape of The Best of the Corrs (CDs were  still exorbitantly expensive back then). It was "love at first hear". It's either I must have been Irish in a past life (if there's such a thing) or I have a Celtic ancestor because everything -- and I mean everything -- the Corrs siblings play or sing, I liked!

I even met kindred souls online who love the Corrs' music as much as I did. In fact, I've become really close friends with some of them over the years. I remember how we used to share both common and rare digital files (mp3s, videos, and sheet music) that only hard-Corr fans are tenacious enough to dig up.

a cute sketch I found online years ago

My fascination with the Corrs' music was such that I even asked a cousin to buy several Irish penny whistles/tin whistles for me when they were due to visit from the U.S. sometime in 2005. When I got my first whistles, I immediately tried to learn the easiest tunes like the whistle parts of Forgiven Not Forgotten, Dreams, Only When I Sleep, Little Wing, I Never Loved You Anyway, etc. Pretty soon, I found that I could also play along with several of the Corrs' full-length instrumental pieces like Rebel Heart, Lough Erin Shore, Minstrel Boy, Silver Strand, Joy of Life, and Haste to the Wedding among others.

My collection of tin whistles have grown in recent years. And as far as priceless possessions go, these are mine:

Oh, and did I mention I bought a violin too and asked a friend to teach me how to play Corrs songs on it? Good thing we already have a piano and a couple of guitars at home or else ... haha! I'd love to own a bodhran though but the recent chance to have this instrument didn't pan out so I figure there must be a perfect time somewhere in the future to acquire one.

Anyway, when the Corrs' fifth album, Home, came out, I found myself singing in Gaelic! Honestly, I've memorized the lyrics to Brid Og Ni Mhaille and Buachaill on Eirne as some of my fellow Corrs fanatics also had. I guess that shows just how much we love the band.

It felt like the end of an era a few years ago when the siblings decided to rest from the music scene and concentrate on their personal passions and families for the meantime. The news that Andrea Corr was coming up with a solo album in 2007 was met with enthusiasm. Ten Feet High contains a lot of beautiful songs with melodies and lyrics that sounded different, and yet nice, from what we were used to hearing from the Corrs. I particularly liked the upbeat cynicism of Champagne from a Straw, the sweetness of This Is What It's All About, and the sadness of Ideal World. It's odd though that the wonderful song entitled Amazing was only included in the Japanese release because it is really one of the best tracks from the album.

Now that Andrea's second album, Lifelines, has been launched last May, it was such a welcome surprise to find out that she's having a concert tour and that the Philippines is one of her stops! Finally, I'll be able to hear her sing live! Here's hoping that Sharon Corr would follow suit and also do a concert tour to promote her own album entitled Dream of You which also has a lot of nice tracks.

But, at the moment, hard-Corr fans are simply ecstatically happy at the news that one of the gorgeous and talented Corr girls is coming over to share with her Filipino fans the gift of her music. I just hope Andrea sings Amazing during the concert. I really, really love that song.

Missing The Corrs

Some of my fellow Corrs fans have been posting old photos of the band on Facebook lately. I guess we simply all miss seeing and hearing Andrea, Caroline, Sharon, and Jim perform together. I was delighted though to see for the first time the following photos of the siblings holding distinctly Filipino delicacies. I read that these were taken during their visit to the Philippines years ago. Unfortunately, I discovered them too late to watch their concert that was held here.

Still, I think other Filipino Corrs fans would also enjoy seeing these as I did :)

Jim with a balut and Sharon holding sapin-sapin

Andrea with halo-halo and Caroline with banana cues
And with news that the group could be set to make a comeback in 2011 with a new album, I'm sure Corrs fans all over the world are as excited as my friends and I are. Here's hoping that when they go on a tour again, the Philippines would be one of the places they will visit. I will most likely save up for a front seat ticket just to watch them live :)

Tripping on The Corrs' Celtic Songs

The Corrs have recently launched their new album entitled HOME. It's a collection of Celtic songs and melodies and I have fallen in love with several of them already. Some are reminiscent of Enya's compositions, which I also like by the way.

Anyhow, two of the cuts from the album are in Irish, with very beautiful melodies sung in Andrea Corr's wonderful voice. I searched the net for the lyrics but can't make heads or tails of the pronunciations ... and I wanted to sing along to them!

So what I did was transcribe one song (that took me more than an hour) and wrote down funny looking words ... which was fine with me, 'coz they made it possible for me to, at least, sing along. That already made me very happy (doesn't take much to make me :p)

Now that I'm finished with Buchaille On Eirne (well, I still want to memorize it LOL), I wonder when I'll have the strength to have a go at Brid Og Ni Mhaille ... hmmm ...

I think I'll stick for now to belting out My Lagan Love, Heart Like a Wheel, and Peggy Gordon. At least those ARE easy to memorize!

Kindred Spirits Loving The Corrs' Music

A perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon? Listening to very talented young people who amazingly sound (almost) exactly like The Corrs. I attended a jamming session yesterday and got to finally meet some of my co-egroup members in the Corrs-ph mailing list. Some of them have been playing Corrs songs together for a long time and already formed a band which, I must say, definitely sounds good!

I have to admit it was a little intimidating at first joining a younger generation. After all, I am older than some of them by at most a decade! But take note, I was born the same year as Caroline Corr so I guess I'm justified :) But once there, I found that our collective fascination and love for the Corrs were enough to bridge any gaps.

I wouldn't go as far as referring to my new friends as "kids" though. They have shown such maturity in the way they show passion for their music (Congrats Kei and the Kaze gang! Your newest song, Rain, rocks!) which inspired me to practice with my tin whistles more (so I can really jam with them next time).

To all you cool gals and guys who made my afternoon a really special one, thank you ... for inviting me, for the free cds and the wonderful company. Here's looking forward to more get-togethers in the future!

Album Review: The Corrs' Borrowed Heaven

Happy, happy, happy me! I bought the newest Corrs album Borrowed Heaven two weeks ago and found it great! Of course I immediately surfed the internet for lyrics of the songs which made me understand them more.

I love all the songs but my favorites are Summer Sunshine, Angel (makes me think they made this song for their mom who passed away due to cancer) and Humdrum. I find the third one sooo funny. It’s reminiscent of their other hit I Never Really Loved You Anyway. Here’s the chorus:
I wanna take you for granted
Drift while you’re talking
Bathe while you’re downstairs
And chat on the phone

Fall asleep before bedtime
Pass in the hallway
Forget your birthday
And shrink all you clothes.
The other night, I was teasing my husband, “Beware when I start singing that song to you!” Being the lovable bear of a man he is, he said “You just try!” with a smile on his face. Ah, I’m glad I get to sing these kinds of songs just for fun :)
