Quick getaways are some of the best ways to unwind and temporarily escape from the stresses of busy work schedules. After all the Christmas rush and the ushering of the New Year, residents of fast-paced Metro Manila, especially, are already looking forward to some relaxation when the summer season comes.

If you are on the lookout for your next vacation destination, consider traveling to Guam, which is just three and a half hours away from Manila. This island is the closest United States territory from the Philippines, and is also home to thousands of our fellow Filipinos. In fact, one of my sisters-in-law has already made it her home many years ago. She and her doctor-husband has a beautiful house there overlooking the ocean and which my mother-in-law describes as a wonderful place to be.

Nature and history lovers would likewise marvel at the many scenic spots such as Two Lovers Point, Fort Sta. Agueda, Inarajan Natural Pool, and Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, which can be reached within a few minutes from the island's main tourism hub via Southern and City Island Tours. Love swimming and the ocean? Don't fret because a lot of exotic beaches are located in various areas where you can relax in Guam's sandy coastlines in the company of your loved ones.
There's also a lot of things to thrill shopaholics in Guam because the island has an extensive lineup of luxury to budget shopping establishments for those craving for much-needed retail therapy. The best news of all is that your purchases are all tax-free! And in case you need some breather in between your shopping frenzy, there are luxury spa facilities in the island to help rejuvenate your mind and body.

Trivia: Visitors to Guam are greeted with "Hafa Adai", which sounds like "half a day" and how much time you can actually spend going around the island. Of course, that quick tour is not recommended if you want to savor all the offerings this destination has to offer. You have to stay more than that!

Discover the many activities you can do in Guam all year round, including the annual event called Shop Guam Festival that aims to further excite tourists with additional discounts across the island, on top of Guam's tax-free shopping perks. There are also sporting and cultural events held there such as the Guam International Marathon, Ko'ko' Road Race, and the Guam Micronesia Island Fair.
