The advent of globalization has enabled everyone all over the world, including Filipinos, to have access to more goods and services from other countries. Unfortunately, not all imported products are of high quality.
Taiwan aims to address this issue by organizing and implementing a campaign to help Filipino consumers identify the best from the rest with the help of the Bureau of Foreign Trade of Taiwan (BOFT) and Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).
This campaign, dubbed Taiwan Excellence, identifies and guarantees high-quality and valuable Taiwanese brands. To be recognized as such and be awarded the quality seal award, products go through a rigorous screening process to ensure that they are of the highest standard and can proudly represent the unique and innovative culture of Taiwan.
The Taiwan Excellence campaign actually started in the 1980’s as part of the Ministry of Economic Affair’s (MOEA) five year plan to raise Taiwan’s international competitiveness by supporting its local brands. But it was only in 1992, under the Image Enhancement Plan, when the Taiwan Excellence Award campaign was finally established. It awards brands and products the Taiwan Excellence Seal based on R&D, design, quality, and marketing efforts scored by an international panel of judges. Those selected are allowed to carry the seal locally and internationally.
Every Taiwan-based brand is eligible to be part of the campaign. Product categories include consumer and business IT, fashion, arts and culture, sports, education, transportation, and more. Judges also choose which deserve the Silver and Gold Award recognition among the top 30 selected from the original winners. Only 10 will be given Gold Awards while the remaining 20 will be given Silver Awards.
This 2014, Taiwan Excellence is introduced to the Philippines for the first time to benefit Filipino shoppers. The theme “Excellent Lifestyle” not just showcases 56 excellent Taiwanese brands but also lets Filipinos recognize how these products enable us to enjoy an excellent lifestyle. Some of the brands under the campaign are actually already very familiar and include Acer, Asus, HTC, BenQ, HCG, Kingcom, MSI, Transcend, and many others.
I personally appreciate how the Taiwan Excellence Award helps Filipinos distinguish the best Taiwan-made products and allow us to enjoy shopping experiences more. Likewise, this encourages consumers to make educated purchases and make it easier to discover what that the country has to offer. What’s more, many of Taiwan’s innovative products could really help users simplify everyday tasks in the house or at work.
