I love watching movies but, at my age, I don't think I could dance for 24 hours straight! What's the connection, you ask?

Last June 27, Star Movies kept moviegoers on their feet all day and all night for a movie marathon that required non-stop dancing. They could only rest a bit while there's no singing and dancing on screen but should start moving and grooving once more when the music starts.

I arrived at the venue around 12NN that day to check out the amazing contenders. By that time, they were already on their third movie since the competition started at 5AM. The groups of avid film viewers were expected to shimmy and shake their "groove thang" while watching famous movie musicals such as Annie, Magic Mike XXL, Dirty Dancing, Frozen, Pitch Perfect 2, Happy Feet 2, and Mamma Mia for the chance to win the grand prize of P200,000.
amazing how they kept their energy going! |
This much anticipated Star Movies contest started in 2010 with a straight-up movie marathon with unlimited food and drinks. It was upgraded with a fitness theme involving yoga and other physical challenges in 2012 while 2013 saw a rigid boot camp theme and where the grand prize was awarded to just one hardy individual.
watch as they danced to Dirty Dancing's best scene
Last year's scare-a-thon showing horror movies required 500 participants to sit completely still until one winner remained. Now those were such tough activities! For 2016, Star Movies allowed viewers to compete by teams. And since it required dancing, Star Movies took the marathon out of the cinemas and onto the dance floor of House Manila in Resorts World. The channel and partner sponsors provided everyone food and drinks throughout the day.

Aside from having to constantly move throughout the contest, participants also had to win in various challenges to earn their bathroom breaks. Since they had to go through rigid requirements while also thinking of their teammates' physical comfort, the event resulted in a fun and chaotic dance party slash movie marathon that went down in Star Movies history.
an all-girls team |
In the end The KPop Moveathoners remained the last team standing and had the privilege of sharing the P200,000 among themselves. Congratulations to members Regiely Prado, Rona Liezl Cruz, Paul Ian Lorica, Michael John Prado, and John Wilford Prado!

Charo Espedido, Director and Head of Marketing for FOX International Channels, shared how excited they were to continue Star Movies' tradition of exciting movie marathons this year and add another cool twist to up the game. "Star Movies Move-A-Thon certainly brought the most dedicated film lovers out of the woodwork and onto the dance floor, and we're proud to be handling the prize over this year to those who really worked for it, had a lot of fun, and really deserved it."
