Many of us have experienced being scammed one way or another. Whether the amount (or effort) you invested was big or small, having someone else run away with your money (or fees you deserve to be paid) the feeling of disappointment and heartbreak of being duped are the same.
These past years, more and more people are being reported in the news to be scammed by fly by night corporations that offer too-good-to-be-true returns of investments. Nobody is exempted as victims range from the very poor to the very rich.
This year, Sun Life Asset Management Company, Inc. (SLAMCI) is taking a stand against investment scams by launching a multi-media campaign aptly called "Slam the Scam." This is the organization's response to the need to address alarmingly escalating concerns about the proliferation of investment scams.
These schemes lure investors to shell out a significant amount of money with the promise of huge, quick returns. Before long, they find themselves penniless with no one to run after to get their money back.
SLAMCI President Valerie Pama affirmed that anybody could be a victim, "Unless they know what to look out for. Financial literacy has always been Sun Life's advocacy and, as the company's mutual funds manager, we are taking on the task of raising awareness about investment scams."
"Slam the Scam" shares tips on what to consider when choosing companies to invest with and what red flags to look out for to avoid dubious organizations. The tips, demonstrated in practical situations to make them more relatable for the audience, will be accessible via print, radio, TV, and digital platforms.

Actor and athlete Matteo Guidicelli was presented as the campaign's voice during a recent press launch in Makati Shangri-La. Pama described Matteo as the perfect financial literacy advocate because he manages and invests his money wisely. "He understands how important it is to entrust one's money with a company that has a good record and integrity; as well as the value of investing for the long-term."
Matteo, on the other hand, shared how keen he is on the opportunity to promote an important cause. "It's my chance for me to use my reach to help out our hardworking kababayans so that they won't get victimized," he shared. "Sadly, there are a lot of such groups out there now, so it's really important that we raise awareness about this issue."
"Investment scams rob Filipinos not just of their hard-earned money, but also of their chance to create a brighter future for themselves and their families. We want to raise awareness among our kababayans, so they can guard themselves against groups with criminal intents, and instead find one with integrity and good record," explained Pama. "After all, protecting one's money is just as important as finding the right investment partner."
For its initial salvo, "Slam the Scam" will be posting a series of videos starring Matteo who will share tips on how to spot investment scams. Watch him on Facebook through the Brighter Life Philippines fan page.
