I've been hearing a lot about the health benefits of acai (pronounced ah-sah-ee) berries for a couple of years now but haven't had the chance to try it yet. These fruits come from the acai tree, the tallest palm tree in the Amazon jungle that grows up to 80 feet. According to Cathy Salimbangon, Vice President for Marketing of Organique, Inc., for centuries, the small, dark purple berries have been a staple in the diet of Brazil's indigenous people. "They consume it regularly and it is what they use to remedy aches and pains, from infection to stomach problems."

Considered by many as the king of super foods in recent years, the acai berry is rich in antioxidants that fights cell damage. "It's basically a cellular approach, our cells are being attacked by free radicals from the pollutants around us, antioxidants help repair them so your body is replenished and functions better overall," simplified Cathy during Organique's recent media event at Prime101 in Pasong Tamo, Makati.
Antioxidants in acai, she said, gives you more energy, delays signs of aging, and strengthens the immune system, among many other health benefits. Acai berries also have omega oils that are needed for proper function of the brain and cardiovascular system. "It has all the basic vitamins and minerals that our body needs aside from being high in dietary fiber."

Cathy is a registered nurse who worked for several years in Geriatrics in the United States and Canada so she has seen how an unhealthy lifestyle can impact one's body. This was what led her and her husband Elton, who worked in the nutraceuticals industry, to launch Organique Acai Premium Blend in 2009. Both believe how important it is to be pro-active in taking care of one's body. "[And] it is best to start while you're young and to go for natural measures, as much as possible."

Present during the event was TV host and wellness icon, Ms. Cory Quirino, who said she already knew of the health benefits of acai berry even before it became available in the Philippines and that she is more than happy to advocate for Organique Acai Premium Blend because it keeps her feeling good and looking good." To prove how acai helps keeps her young, she whipped out her senior citizen's card and proudly showed it to us, sharing a funny anecdote of the time she was applying for one.
Ms. Cory revealed that acai berries have a high Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value. "The higher the value, the better it can fight inflammation [or infection]." Basically, ORAC is a lab test that quantifies a food item's antioxidant capacity.

Dancer and fitness enthusiast Regine Tolentino was also quick to testify, "Organique Acai Premium Blend helps maintain my energy level throughout the day, even with back to back Zumba classes."
The recommended dose of Organique Acai Premium Blend is 30-60ml per day depending on the health conditions of a person. We were made to try a shot glass full and I found the taste very pleasant. So this is definitely something I wouldn't mind drinking daily.

Cathy however clarified that Organique is not just a refreshing drink. "We are effect-driven. If you're down with something, you can double dose or triple dose it because you need more nutrients when you're sick," suggested Cathy. "It is best taken on an empty stomach -- pure, with water, with ice, or added to your smoothie."
Organique Acai Premium Blend is available in 946-ml bottles. Each sells for P2,500 at Mercury Drug, Pure Pharmacy, Robinson's Supermarket, South Star Drug, and Watsons. It is also distributed in the United States, Hong Kong, Japan, and the Middle East.
