Tiny Buds: Baby Products With All-Natural and Safe Ingredients + Blog Giveaway (Winners Announced)

Safety is one of the top concerns of parents when it comes to taking care of babies. But, did you know that a lot of baby products in the market today actually contain harmful chemicals that may lead to health-related conditions?

We take great care in preparing food for our little ones but we sometimes forget that our bodies also get nourishment through products we apply on our skin. Take note that babies and kids have 20-30% thinner skin than adults, which make them more vulnerable to unwanted toxins from products they are exposed to.

The thing is, we don't have to be chemists to choose safe and baby-friendly products! Here are some useful tips:

1. Know the NO-NO ingredients - Don't be fooled by hidden toxins behind cute and colorful labels. Always check the ingredients' list for these harmful chemicals:

~ Parabens, used as a synthetic preservative to extend shelf life, are widely researched cancer-linked toxins that are found in baby lotions, shampoos, and body washes.
~ Phtalates, used as stabilizer or base in personal care products, can affect the body's hormonal system and has been linked to autism, learning disabilities, breast cancer, infertility, and even childhood obesity according to a study by the Children's Environmental Health Center, NY.
~ Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS is a cheap foaming and cleaning ingredient found in soaps, shampoos, and cleaning products. The International Journal of Toxicology warns that SLS levels in many mainstream products are high enough to cause severe allergies and skin corrosion.
~ Flouride is especially harmful for kids, says the Flouride Action Network, because young ones absorb four times more fluoride but are unable to excrete as much as adults. Flouride buildup inside the body may negatively affect bone structure and contribute to neurological impairment.
~ Talc (or Talcum Crystals) in baby powders are found by the American Cancer Society to contain asbestos-like particles that increase cancer risk for both mothers and babies by 30%.
~ Detergents may keep dishes sparkly and shiny, but the USA Environmental Protection Agency warns that dishwashing soaps with detergents are unfit for cleaning baby bottles and utensils due to toxic soap residue that may be accidentally ingested by kids.

2. Be a Smart Shopper - Educate yourself to shop carefully.

~ Choose products that are labeled "Paraben-free", "SLS-free", "Food-Safe", and "No Artificial Preservatives".
~ Before shopping, prepare a list of products you trust to be safe and non-toxic. This serves as a handy guide and cuts your shopping time in half.
~ Ignore store promotions! Don't compromise your kids' health and wellness by buying products just because they have special discounts.
~ Test new products on yourself first before using on your children. Apply a small amount of product on your inner arm and wait for several hours to check for any skin reactions.
~ Monitor kids carefully for negative reactions or any sign of discomfort when trying new products.
~ Go minimal. Less is definitely more. Instead of buying a large assortment of baby products, select a few that are safe and toxic-free.
