The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Awards 2014: Recognizing Real-Life Heroes

In 1988, the Philippine Jaycee Senate, now officially known as JCI Senate Philippines, conceived “The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL)” Awards. The organization enlisted the support of Insular Life to institutionalize public recognition of men and women, aged 41 years and above, who deserve credit for their exemplary contributions to society.

Dr. Lagmay, Dr. Ella, and Sec. Singson
Last January 29, JCI Senate Philippines and Insular Life honored three men who are making a difference in the lives of their fellow Filipinos. In times like these, when a lot of our countrymen are still rebuilding their lives after the recent calamities, it is heartening to know that there are individuals who continue to serve as good examples and who remind us that there are still a lot of things to be thankful for.

The TOFIL awardees for 2013 are Dr. Arsenio B. Ella for Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development; Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay for Geology/Earth Sciences; and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio L. Singson for Government/Public Service.

His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III was present during the ceremonies to personally hand over the trophies to the winners. In his message, the nation’s leader commended the three awardees for their contribution to “the advancement of our people. [They] have done much to elevate their fields, promote public welfare, and fuel national development.” President Aquino lauded their actions and endeavors that make them “true inspirations for our people and ideal role models whom our citizens can emulate.”
