Some years ago, I heard this super hilarious monologue/comedy act called “Maritess and the Superfriends”. If you haven't encountered it yet, here’s a clip I found in Youtube:

Rex Navarrete has that ability to tickle fellow Filipinos’ funny bones. After all, we live in a nation where people could laugh even during the direst of circumstances. We are also comfortable with laughing about ourselves because, no matter how embarrassing some things are, we are honest enough to concede that they are true.
This August, Fil-Am comedian Rex Navarrete comes back to Manila bringing an all-new act, after over a year-long hiatus. Expect to laugh until your sides hurt as Rex dishes out his funny and quirky observations of life in general and on being a Filipino, including his hilarious take on a famous global boxing icon.
Navarrete recently had his national television late-night debut on "Lopez Tonight" on the TBS Network. He has been making people laugh for the past 22 years at established stand-up comedy venues such as the The Punchline, The Improvs, The Laugh Factory, and the Gotham Comedy Club NYC. He’s the only Fil-am comedian to have four audio CDs and three DVDs of his various performances. That is quite a feat considering the contents are not songs or movies.
Like me, other Filipinos got their early doses of Navarrete online with animated shorts of his staple shtick “SBC Packers” and “Maritess and the Superfriends.” In the early 2000s, Navarrete took Manila by storm because the stories about his childhood and of relatives living in the US resonated with the local crowds. His style was a breath of fresh air for the stand-up comedy scene, which predominantly was more centered at poking fun at the members of the audience for cheap laughs.
Watch out for “Rex@Resorts World Manila” this coming August 24, 2011, 8:00pm at the Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT).
