Restaurant Review: My Singapore Food Street in SM Megamall

Filipinos have adventurous palates. This is evident in the way international restaurant brands keep coming here to set up their businesses.

My Singapore Food Street has a more personal history though. This food sensation located in SM Megamall was actually born out of its Managing Director's longing for food she grew up with. Aside from Singapore, Vivien Tan has made the Philippines her second home. She partnered with Jean Henri Lhuiller to offer Filipinos a taste of Singapore in our local setting.

The lovely fashion model, TV host, and restaurateur has graced advertisement and magazine covers all over Southeast Asia as well as hosted lifestyle television programs such as The Juice for Channel V International and Star Asia Travel for Star TV. She currently divides her time between Singapore and Manila.

the busy kitchen
Established in January 2013, My Singapore Food Street offers iconic Singaporean Hawker flavors freshly cooked in a showcase kitchen where diners can watch their food being prepared, steamed, wok-tossed, and braised. Families, friends, and colleagues are invited there to take pleasure in a wide array of sumptuous Asian food.

The menu makes it hard to choose dishes because everything looked delicious! Here are some that we've got to try recently:

For starters, have a go at the Roti Pratha (flat and slightly chewy bread-like pancake that's best eaten while freshly cooked and warm) served with Kopi/Teh Tarik (pulled coffee or tea drink). You have the option to dip the roti in condensed milk or curry. I prefer the latter and really liked eating it in between sips of the tarik.

The authentic drink that originated in India, but is also commonly found in Malaysia and Singapore, is served  as Kopi and Teh C (with milk), Kopi and Teh O (with sugar), and Kopi and Teh Kosing (black without sugar). There are also a wide variety of Cold Beverages and Ice Blended drinks to choose from. The Frozen Milo Dinosaur has likewise become my favorite!

When it comes to the main dishes, I'd have to say I love the Hainanese Chicken served with Hainanese rice, ginger sauce, chili sauce, sweet soy sauce, and chicken soup! If there's one Singapore dish that I won't get tired of savoring, it would be this. When you do get to try it for the first time, don't immediately judge that the steamed chicken is bland. You need to use the accompanying sauces and find the right blend for your taste. I tell you, once you've gotten it right, you'll crave for this again the next day!

If you're a fan of barbecued meat, try the Satay Chicken or Pork. These are grilled meats marinated in special spices, ginger, garlic, lemongrass, and onions. They don't taste like our local barbecue but are tasty in their own way.

Then, warm your tummy with sips of the flavorful luglug noodle soup called Laksa, which comes in coconut creamy soup topped with fish cake, togue, baby prawn, and boiled egg. It is spicy though so make sure to have a glass of water nearby. But the heat on your tongue would be worth it.

Another must-try noodle dish is the Char Kway Teow, which is a very popular Singaporean dish along with the Hainanese Chicken and Laksa. This one is made of stir fried rice noodles, rogue, garlic, red onion, egg, fish cake, shrimp, and squidballs with dark soy sauce.

The beef lover in me also enjoyed the Black Pepper Beef that is marinated then cooked with garlic, red and green bell pepper, red onion, crushed black pepper, and oyster sauce served with a side of plain rice and scrambled egg.

what I ate ...
Aside from being delicious, the items on the menu are really affordable and are highly recommended to be tried by students, health conscious individuals, and curious and open-minded people who love going on food adventures. Imagine, you don't have to go out of the country to have a taste of real Singapore food! I am actually looking forward to going back because there are a lot of other dishes I'd like to try in future visits.

Seek out My Singapore Food Street on the 2nd floor Bridgeway in SM Megamall. It promises to go out of its way to provide guests with a great and memorable dining experience. Ours was!
