February heralds another year for the Chinese community as they celebrate their own New Year. Last weekend, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls and Lucky Chinatown in Binondo went all out in lining up a lot of activities to usher in the Year of the Snake. It's exciting to be in the middle of something this festive. There were so many colorful decorations, you won't know where to look first!
Mall-goers got to take part in Lucky Chinatown's grand celebration from February 9 to 11 which features entertaining spectacles to showcase the best of Chinese tradition and culture. The festivities kicked off last Saturday morning with a colorful parade around Binondo that culminated at the Lucky Chinatown Atrium.
There, we got to witness traditional ceremonies such as the Dotting of the Eye of the Chinese Lion, the Ang Pao Ceremony, and the Ringing of the Ceremonial Gong to mark the official opening of the celebrations. Local officials and leaders of the Chinese Filipino Business Club Inc. came to grace the occasion.
The whole afternoon was dedicated to cultural presentations from Chinese schools and various performing groups which led to a fashion show by blogger Camille Co and live performances by Mike Chan, True Faith, Luigi D'Avola and my good friend Champ Lui Pio who rocked the Atrium with beloved songs from his Hale days. I was glad to bump into other friends from my THDC Family and PolyEast Records who were also there to support Luigi's and Champ's performances.
At the stroke of midnight, my friends and I witnessed the grand fireworks display from the rooftop deck of the Ramada Manila Central where we stayed overnight.
According to Megaworld First Vice President and Commercial Division Head Kevin L. Tan, they want to give their customers a celebration like no other by coming up with an exciting lineup of activities to usher in the Year of the Water Snake. "Lucky Chinatown is located at the heart of Binondo, Manila and we believe this is the best place to welcome the Chinese New Year with good luck, good health, fortune, and happiness," he explained.
The festivities continued on for the next two days and I'm sure a lot of mall visitors also got to enjoy the many spectacles that Lucky Chinatown has prepared. As I've experienced first hand, there really is no better place to celebrate Chinese New Year than in the heart of Binondo :)
