TELUS International Philippines Grants CAD$60K to Six Local Charities

I like knowing stories of big companies that have Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives because there are a lot of worthy causes that need help and we can't rely on the government to do everything. All of us, actually, whether in big or small ways, must also do our part in making our country a better place for everyone.

The TELUS International Philippines (TIP) Community Board's initiative started as a mere seedling that has grown into a tree with branches and a foundation of strong roots to support future growth. Given the recent flooding in Metro Manila where some communities were swept away, the board provided relief assistance to  help assist and restore affected communities and schools through the Philippine National Red Cross - Rizal Chapter and Project Pearls.

The four other grant recipients include Unang Lingap Kapwa Philippines, Inc. (ULKPI)Empowering Communities with Hope and Opportunitites through Sustainable Initiatives (ECHOsi) FoundationAlay Pag-asa Christian Foundation, Inc., and Childhope Asia Philippines, Inc.

Each NGO received CAD $10,000 each from the TIP Community Board. This initiative echoes TELUS' commitment to its philosophy "We Give Where We Live". Thus, other charitable organizations are invited to apply for one-time funding for projects in the areas of health and wellness, education and sports, and arts and culture. In aggregate, the TIP Community Board distributes up to CAD$100,000 to local charities every year. Javier Infante, chairman of the TIP Community Board, led the formal turnover of the grants to representatives of the six NGOs at the New World Hotel in Makati last October 17.

Teresita L. Silva, president of Childhope Asia Philippines, Inc. expressed their gratitude to TELUS for choosing them as one of the beneficiaries. "The board's generous contribution will greatly help us to continue our mission to protect, educate, and counsel the abandoned street children to leave the streets and to live in recovery center to work towards a more humane and productive life."

"The efforts of TELUS to reach out to poor and deserving communities in remote areas of the Philippines is admirable," stated Jeannie Javelosa, President of ECHOsi Foundation. "We are very happy to be part of the TELUS International Philippines Community Board's projects and hope that many more will be as fortunate as our Sulu young weavers to get a jump start with this contribution."

TIP President Jeffrey Uthoff shared how proud TELUS International Philippines is to help the six organizations and the noble goals that each work to achieve. "At TELUS, we want to lend a hand to Filipinos through financial support for education, sustainability, programs affecting change in communities, rebuilding homes, and the other advocacies that these NGOs represent."

There are 13 TELUS Community Boards that have distributed more than $5.3 million dollars a year to community projects. Since their inception in 2005, the boards have contributed more than $30 million and supported more than 2300 community projects.
