Dishwashing Bar Solution Proven Unsanitary

A week ago, I posted a poll asking which of my readers think is the dirtiest item in their home. Before I reveal who the winner of the contest is, please read the following very important information ...

How would you feel if you found out that the plate you are eating on have been scrubbed with a dirty sock? Super gross, right? But did you know that a dirty sock may be a more hygienic option than what many Filipinos are still using to clean their dishes -- the dishwashing bar solution?

At an intimate media briefing in Fully Booked Bonifacio Global City hosted by Duday Gallinguez the other day, Joy Dishwashing Liquid and Dr. Jessica Simbahan of the Philippine Society for Microbiology (PSM) revealed a survey that exposes the shocking truth behind dishwashing bar solutions. It was confirmed that dishwashing bar solution has up to 10x level of contaminants compared to a dirty sock and other dirty household items!

Jan Ang, Joy Brand Manager, described that many moms in the Philippines use leftover laundry soap, water, and a dishwashing sponge to clean dishes because they believe they are saving money this way. "They do not realize that this bar solution is very unsanitary, especially when the bar solution is left exposed for many hours." As part of Joy's "Nay, Gising!" campaign, Joy commissioned the survey to serve as a wake-up call for Filipino moms and educate them on proper kitchen hygiene.

We saw for ourselves how the level of contaminants are measured. Dr. Simbahan demonstrated how a luminometer or germ meter works by using it on a guest's cell phone and another guest's handbag (both items were found to have around 1000+ RLU). Through the luminometer, Dr. Simbahan, and a third party research agency, found out that the bar solution consistently proved to have the highest level of contaminants among a list of dirty household items which included a toilet seat cover, a toilet bowl rim, and a trash can lid.

The tests were conducted last February. Luminometers were used to measure adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the universal energy molecule found in animal, plant, bacterial, yeast, and mold cells. When ATP is brought into contact with a Luciferase/Luciferin reagent, light is emitted in direct proportion to the amount of the ATP present. The luminometer measures the amount of light generated to determine the level of contamination. Readings are expressed in Relative Light Units (RLU).

The following table shows the average luminometer readings from tests conducted by a third party research agency and the PSM:

To further enlighten us, PSM President Dr. Supachai Basit explained that a dishwashing bar solution is a breeding ground for contaminants, including bacteria and other types of germs. "This is especially true if the laundry bar is left exposed for many hours and the dishwashing sponge is constantly wet." In a study from Japan that measure the presence of bacteria in household items, scientists found that the dishwashing sponge was contaminated with several types of bacteria: E. coli and Staph. aureus, which both cause food poisoning, and Ps. aeruginosa, which leads to opportunistic infection.

Thus, the PSM recommends that Filipino moms throw out their unsanitary dishwashing bar solutions to help protect their family from germs and instead trust the only dishwashing liquid accepted by the Philippine Society for Microbiology -- the new Joy Antibac with Power of Safeguard

So stop cleaning your dishes with germs and start using Joy Antibac with Power of Safeguard for 99% germ protection.

I gathered the names of this blog's readers who gave the correct answer to the survey and conducted a digital raffle draw via Random.org. Congratulations to Merlinda Little!
